With the completion of our Sd.Kfz.261 project milestone, we’re excited to dive into a restoration that has long been on our team’s wishlist: the Australian Local Pattern 1 Carrier, or LP1. This project stands out from our previous ones, and the team is eager to tackle the unique challenges it presents.
The LP1, hull number 76, was recently moved from storage into our Fabrication Workshop. We began by stripping down all components to thoroughly assess and address the bodywork. Over the post-war years, this carrier underwent extensive modifications, including being repurposed as a bulldozer. These changes involved cutting and extending the body using parts of the frontal armour.
Our primary goal is to return the LP1 to its original condition. To achieve this, the team is carefully reversing the post-war modifications. This involves cutting the hull at the altered points, ensuring the vehicle returns to its correct length, and welding everything back together. The LP1 features a bolt/riveted body, unlike the fully welded LP2, adding an extra layer of complexity to the restoration.
We have also started dismantling the engine to evaluate its condition. Recent research has brought new information about the engine to light, which the team is currently reviewing before proceeding further.
We’ve relocated the LP1‘s rear axle to another workshop for a thorough evaluation. Additionally, we’re examining the tracks. While we have a substantial number of track links, we need to verify whether they are the correct ones for the LP1.
Our recent updates have generated valuable information and contacts from enthusiasts and experts alike. A massive thank you to everyone who has reached out, your contributions are immensely helpful and greatly appreciated. This collaborative effort enriches our research and ensures accuracy in the restoration process.
