Work on the 4 Serie Sd.Kfz.223 chassis continues. The last wheel assembly has now been fitted. The problem with the drive coupling cover has been resolved with the fitting of an original example. The two missing drive shafts are currently being sourced. If this search is unsuccessful we will cast and machine replacements. The differential has been rebuilt and left in position pending the resolution of the drive shaft issue. The gearbox casings have been cleaned and the remaining parts removed – one of which will have to be replaced given it is not only bent but had previously been repaired badly.
The gear selector mechanism for the Sd.Kfz.223 has been identified as a 801v chassis (Ausf.B) example. This had obviously been fitted at some point during the war with the missing or damaged gear change mechanism replaced with a current example. This is a boon for us as it will be fitted to the 5 Serie Sd.Kfz.261 of the Collection. The current Inside Track issue covers the detail behind the two different gear change mechanism and explores the decisions made through the process.
The interior of our 4 Serie Sd.Kfz.222 is currently being mapped out. There is precious little information on the 4 Serie. Sd.Kfz.222 interior. Sleuth work required – all the more enjoyable. All of this will be covered in Inside Track.
